Race and Ethnicity Subcultures

Hunt et al. “How Asian Am I?”

1) List and describe the three sets of ways that young Asian American youths are negotiating their racial/ethnic identity and their subcultural identity. Each set should be described with at least 250 words: a) disjuncture b) connectedness c) no connection.

2) How do stereotypes (the model minority myth), along with issues of “authenticity” and/or whitewashing impact these ways of negotiating their identities? You can address this as a whole (you don’t have to do this for each set of identity processing) in at least 500 words and you must integrate at least three quotes from the reading.

Zine: “Redefining Resistance: towards an Islamic subculture in schools”

1) Watch this short news clip: https://ottawasun.com/2012/09/17/broten-approves-of-muslim-prayer-rooms-in-catholic-high-school/wcm/3b455cdc-17c3-455d-8d73-315f6af482a3

2) Write at least an 800-word essay that explores the WHY and the HOW of resistance by Islamic students in school-based primarily on Zine but also the video clip. This essay should be somewhat evenly split – so there should be about 300 words on the WHY and about 500 words on the HOW of resistance. Incorporate at least three quotes from the article and reference both video clips.

All of these responses can be in one Word document, which should be uploaded via “Assignments” by 9 pm on 4/2.
