What is a thallus?

A thallus is a green shoot or stem. It cannot be distinguished as a leaf stem or root. It is often the main part of an algae.
The thallus of a fungus is usually called a mycelium.
This is a liverwort. Figure (a) is female and figure (b) is male.
Classification of lichens is based on the thallium.
