Unit 5 focused on the respiratory and lymphatic systems. As a primary portal of entry to the body, the respiratory system in frequently in contact with a variety of pathogens. Luckily, we have options available for preventative measures for the various diseases in the form of vaccines. The purpose of a vaccine is to elicit a primary immune response to form memory cells and provide protection against the disease, but the person does not become ill from the vaccine.
The goal of this discussion is to have you select one vaccine preventable disease and discuss the type of vaccine utilized for disease prevention. Your post must contain the following information:
The vaccine preventable disease you selected
The pathogen, portal of entry, and primary site of infection
Type of vaccine (attenuated, dead, toxoid)
Effectiveness of vaccine
Disease incidence since vaccine implementation

This week your response must include 2-3 sentences discussing incidence rate of the disease in the last decade, whether the disease increased or decreased in number, and what this trend may be attributed to.
