TASK
The analysis helps you determine what to say and how to say it before you attempt to
communicate with an audience. You will be writing an analysis on the situation below.
SCENARIO
Your business sells, maintains and repairs residential elevators for senior citizens and people
with disabilities. You want to develop some new partnerships and also continue to improve
your elevator design so that it has voice recognition capability and integrates with the rest of a
“smart” home in the future. You want to develop new contacts and partnerships for your
development and for future business. You want to approach Spinal Cord Injury BC to 1) get their
advice; 2) identify some new strategic partners; and/or 3) be provided with networking contacts
of those willing to invest. (See information on the association below.) You have heard that there
are about 100,000 people with spinal cord injuries in Canada.
INSTRUCTIONS
Write in full sentences or point form as instructed.
1. In point form, list at least three features of the context/situation. For example, are you a
service business?
2. In full sentences, in your own words, state and analyze three important characteristics of
this audience (Spinal Cord Injury BC) as those characteristics relate to your purpose in
writing.
3. In point form, name and explain three important barriers to communication in this
situation.
4. State the main message for your communication to the Spinal Cord Injury BC.
5. In point form, state the purpose. What are you trying to do: Get advice? Get new
partners? Get new contacts? Make them aware of your organization?
6. In full sentences, state your choice of product/ communication channel and explain the
benefits of using that channel.
7. Outline in point form the main points that you will make in your letter. (Recall the
outline format of the organizational chart that we talked about in class.)
