Romans

Write a 3-4 page essay addressing the topic below. Make sure to include an introductory paragraph that outlines the structure and central points you will make in your paper–and make sure to read through comments on essays 1-3, and avoid errors (especially in grammar, spelling, and organization) that were noted in those comments. This long essay is due Monday, November 9, at 11:59PM.

First, read carefully the review of significant Romans about to be reborn from the Underworld (presented by Anchises to Aeneas in book 6 of the Aeneid), and then compare this to the structure and content of the Forum of Augustus as described in Stambaughs chapter “The Augustan City” and in Lecture 10.  How do both seem to present a coherent and glorious view of Roman history (address here specifically the notion of “summi viri”)?

Then, summarize Terentias connection with the gens Fulvia and the condition of this family in the game play of Arc 3.  Is it glorious?  Are the Fulvii prominent in Rome during this time?  Is their house in great condition, and thick with slaves and clients?  How has Terentia been betrayed by Augustus in the course of the Arc (discuss specific examples)?

Finally, given the answer to these questions, if Terentia were to walk through the Augustan Forum, why might she disagree with the view of Roman history presented there?  If she were to read the Aeneid, how might she interpret the exit of Aeneas from the Underworld?  Which gate (horn or ivory) sends forth true dreams to the upper world?  Through which gate does Aeneas pass? What does this suggest about the truth of the synopsis of Roman history he just witnessed in the Underworld, and why might this resonate with a Roman like Terentia, given her experience with Augustus?
