1. Read this news release about an EPA settlement with Amazon for illegal online sales of imported pesticides: https://www.epa.gov/enforcement/reference-news-release-epa-settles-amazon-distributions-illegal-pesticides (Links to an external site.)
2. Considering this article, this week’s readings and slides, do you think the FIFRA provision that allows pesticides banned in the U.S. to be exported overseas is wise in the current global online marketplace? Do you agree with the policy allowing manufacture in the U.S. when deemed unsafe for U.S. use? Do you think this regime is working or needs to be reevaluated? Does this increase the risk that such pesticides will be sold back to U.S. consumers online or residue on products imported legally into the U.S.? Are there other examples like the Amazon settlement that you can find? Are there any articles or public statements from other countries about their position on the U.S. policy of exporting such pesticides banned domestically? Any ideas of how to solve this global problem – or is not something that needs “solving” internationally and each country should have the independence to decide for itself the cost-benefit analysis of allowing production, sale & use of chemicals in their own nations?
