The role of EBP in my specialty area proves that patient who attend dialysis regularly can have a fulling life if quality initiatives are maintained. Collaboration between all members of the patient care team and patient involvement help with better outcomes. Evidence supports the view that people with long term conditions who are encouraged to take a greater interest in their treatment can experience a range of health benefits (Barnes and Hancock 2013). Comparing the implementation of EBP in dialysis with medical surgical nursing is generally the same. The focus remains on the patient and improvement of care and prevention of harm while in the care of the provider. The disadvantages of care for a renal patient in the limited literature with proven practice changes in the task that are regularly preformed within the dialysis population. In the future I would like to see more research on topics in the ESRD community. I hope to be able to contribute to adding my perspective and research as well.

In my current role, I am a medical / surgical unit nurse in a regional hospital that is part of a large organization. My hospital supports the use of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and all graduate nurses that are hired participate in a nurse residency program with culminates with a requirement to complete an evidence-based practice proposal. I am a member of the evidence-based nursing council. Anyone can bring a topic to the council. We meet monthly and format a PICOT question and conduct a literature review. We bring our findings back to the person that brought us the topic. Additionally, we are tasked with teaching other nurses about evidence-based practice. We are having an event that all staff are invited to attend. There will be various stations and we will all talk about different aspects of EBP.
As an advanced practice registered nurse in a clinical nurse leader specialty I remain at the point of care. My role will be to build and expand the use of EBN in the delivery of care. I will be responsible for creating a culture on the unit that encourages nurses to question practice and policies and search for the best evidence. (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016)
An advanced practice nurse educator has a contrasting role to mine. This nurse is not present at the point of care but is responsible for developing, implementing and oversight of the EBP education for the staff. Even though we have different roles in evidence-based nursing, both have the same goal of providing patient centered care and improving patient outcomes.
