Modernity

How do Mary Shelleys Frankenstein and Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness symbolically address some of the changes, disruptions, or challenges of modernity? Which issues do they address and how do they do so? Keep in mind that both works are fiction (made-up). So, if they have something to say about modernity, it is only through analogy, symbolism, metaphor, etc. You will need to identify the larger issues the novels address but also demonstrate how specific passages in these novels do that work.
