understood by infants at an early age, when they observe the world around them and hear their
caregivers attach meaning to words and phrases.

-Do you know your first word? If you are able, communicate with an early caregiver who might
remember. Another option would be to discuss the first word of a child in your own life. Why do
you think that word was common to you? Do you remember early phrases you, or a child in your
life, repeated while mimicking the adults around them?
