The assignment:
“Home is […] the collective memories: the shared stories, foods, smells and music that we attach meaning to” (The Arabesque Table, Reem Kassis).  Salt Houses traces the journey of different generations of a Palestinian family in search of a “home” and their desire for belonging: from Jaffa, to Nablus, to Kuwait City, to Amman, to Paris, to Boston, to Beirut.

Explain the 2 following questions in no less than 700 words and no more than 1000 words:

1. What is “home” for at least 3 characters in the novel? And do they find one? Where and how? [Note that “Home” may not necessarily signify a city or something material. It can be a practice or an abstract concept.] 

2. What roles do memories play for at least 3 characters to create a sense of belonging to a “home” ?

Suggested roles:

– to help with the feeling of displacement and dissociation;

– to cope with loss, grief, and fear;

– to appreciate joyful moments;

– other?

Use citations from the novel to support your ideas.  At least 2 citations to the novel per paragraph with proper page references.
