Project 1: Draft Prompt

The Texts
Rhetorical Situation, an Introduction — Itai Halevi
Coming to Terms from Rewriting — Joseph Harris — Chapter 1
The Rhetoric of the College Application Essay: Removing Obstacles for Low Income and Minority Students — James Warren

The Task

In his chapter Coming to Terms, Harris offers a model of academic writing. He writes:
[I]n dealing with other writers, your aim should be less to prove them right or wrong, correct or mistaken, than to assess both the uses and limits of their work. That is to say, academic writing rarely involves a simple taking of sides, an attack on or defense of set positions, but rather centers on a weighing of options, a sorting through of possibilities.

So, lets put Harriss ideas to work: Write an essay in which you try out what Harris calls rewriting in order to come to terms with Warrens essay. To do this, assess the uses and/or limits of Warrens ideas or claims. In other words, what use can you make of Warrens ideas? What limits do you see to Warrens discussion?

The Terms:
Length: 4-6 pages
Format: MLA citations, 12 pt font, double spaced, 1 inch margins
Due Date: 9/30/2020
