Using specific examples from the readings in Major Problems (both primary and secondary), answer the question. You must cite specific sources from the readings in your answer:

George Washington stated that the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government depended on the success of the American experiment in self-government. Benjamin Franklin put it even more bluntly. As Franklin left the room in which the Constitutional Convention was held, supposedly a woman asked him, What have you men given us in there? He replied, A republic, if you can keep it. What do you think Washington and Franklin meant by these statements? Your answer should cover the time period from 1789 to 1815. Be sure to focus your essay on important political, economic, and military events/controversies that illustrate the meanings of the above quotes.
