The institutions and policies created to provide a stable international order after World War II are no longer effective and should be eliminated or greatly modified to allow for national sovereignty (consider Brexit, for example). The liberal transatlantic order humanitarian interventions, human rights, and supranational institutions have little to show for their efforts and have, paradoxically, made citizens strangers in their own land.
Agree or disagree? (This thesis statement can adjusted, depending on your argument. Your aim to prove or disprove this statement with the evidence presented in the readings of the last two weeks.)
Be specific in your answer, if you want to argue that the statement is true: Explain why these ideas/institutions (EU, human rights, multilateralism) have failed, leading to failed states, ethnic conflict (forced migration), and terrorism. Explain how the growth of nationalism and populism worldwide challenges liberal democracies and why they are forces of change that must be accommodated. Consider where sovereignty should reside.
On the other hand, if you want to argue that the forces of disintegration challenging the postwar order today illustrate exactly why there is a need for a supranational, international order, explain the origins of these forces (failed states and terrorism, populism, etc.) and explain why solutions are required to salvage the present international order. What solutions are offered in the reading and are there others you believe should be considered?
