Encounter Jounal

Important: You will have to let me know in 2 hours about what Artifact youre choosing!!!

Task: Choose any artistic work discussed in modules 1-5 (there is a partial list at the bottom of this prompt) that you want to spend some more time with. Then, follow these steps:

1. Review any information given about the artifact in course material. For most artifacts, you will need to consult a reputable external source. These do not have to be scholarly, but they should be either signed or attributed to a cultural organization (like a museum) of some sort.
2. Spend some time engaging with the work itself (listening if it is a piece of music, reading if it is a poem, viewing if it is a painting, etc.)
3. Write a brief reflection of 1-2 pages that addresses all of the following questions:

What qualities of this object seem to draw your attention the most? Why?
What aspects of the objects context are most relevant or most influence how you interact with it? How?
How does your own context (previous experiences, cultural background, this historical moment) influence your interaction with the work?
What would you say to someone else to help them have the most interesting/rewarding experience of this work?
Criteria for Success: An effective journal submission will clearly and succinctly address the three questions above. It will utilize appropriate terms in describing the artifact and its context, and it will demonstrate an awareness of how the elements of the interpretive encounter interact.
