This Final Research Paper constitutes as the Final for this course. The student may not pass this course without submission of this paper.
Select three genres from any traditional or world music genres in your textbook and those studied in class. You may include no more than 1 world music (contemporary) genre and no more than 2 genres discussed in class. Using the chosen genres, compare and contrast the different expressions and musical styles of the genres (i.e. tonality, rhythm, form, melody, etc.). Highlight and compare how the social and historical events affected the different genres. Give examples from works that you listened to in your research.
In comparing the works, follow an argument that would tie the works together in some way. For example, you may focus on works with similar instrumentation (zithers, lutes, vocal, etc.), or works that all come from a specific region (East Asia, Africa, Indonesia, South America, etc.) or works that use the same purpose (devotional, court, indigenous ritual, etc.).
Bibliography: must contain 2 or more academic sources (journals and encyclopedias), and 2 or more non-academic sources. Also include the sources for the music of the genres that you listened to (recordings on Smithsonian archive, Youtube, for example). The bibliography for the final paper need not be annotated.
The length of the paper must be between 3000-4000 words, double-spaced (excluding the bibliography).
The paper should be in an APA or MLA format.
