Critical analysis of a poem or response to theoretical text, 4 pages)

This course will explore the early Twentieth Century global Black Arts movement of Negritude in a comparative manner.  The readings cover literary works in English, French, and Spanish.  While students are encouraged to read the material in the original languages, all texts will be available in English. The comparative approach of the course will also be present in its coverage of cultural texts beyond the realm of literature:  the visual arts, historical and legal texts, and aesthetic manifestos
