USE THIS INFORMATION TO ANSEWR THE LIFE EXPERIENCE
I was born in Bangladesh. I came to the United State of America in 2014 with my parents. After college I want to improve the lives of others and work in public service. I have most interest in becoming a police officer. To become a police officer it’s my passion because I want to help other people and also I want to be a part of my community.
English as a Second Language
I was born in Bangladesh in. I started going to school at five. At first I didn’t want to go to school like other kids because I was scared. However, after going to school, I loved it because I made many friends and had nice teachers who helped me. Going to school in Bangladesh was not that difficult for me because everything was taught in Bengali which is my native language. My education in New York was much different however, It was all in English which is not my native language. I enjoyed going to school In Bangladesh. Because the challenges were different from the challenges I faced in New York City. For example, speaking and participating in English has been the biggest challenge I faced in school. Speaking in English publically scared me because I was afraid of what people might think if I said something wrong or if my communication was not clear. In Bangladesh, I was a good student so to start from the bottom and work my way up was a big challenge I had to overcome. While moving to a new county, learning a new language and going to a new school was very challenging, it increased my confidence and inspired me to go into a field that would help others. However, I started to like school after a couple of months because I was making friends and had good teachers who were very helpful.
I arrived in New York City in 2014. My parents enrolled me in the Bronx High School of Business. This high school was different from the school in Bangladesh because of the language. Before coming to America, I never thought about the language challenge I will face. I did not think about how Ill learn English, write it and speak it. I did not expect myself to become a very nervous student. starting school, I wished I understood English like the other students because I became frustrated when I didn’t understand. I also had trouble when the teacher asked me questions because I didn’t know how to answer. And they used to help me a lot. They used to tell me to practice writing, speaking, and reading. I got better, but not perfect. I had a really good friend named Kadiatou who used to help me and encouraged me to ignore people who laughed at me. She told me to believe in myself. Those experiences made me who I am today. Today, I am in college. I can speak, read and write in English independently. My English is not perfect but I am more fluent than ever and everyday I get better.
I learned that in this country it is very important to know English and speak English. Not being strong in English, people will make fun of you and judge your intelligence. But when you are able to speak the language, you can defend yourself and be confident. To do this, you have to be determined to achieve your goals. It took me time to learn English, but because I was determined I am here today. Through my experiences of learning English as a second language, I came to realize nothing is impossible if you try hard. You can overcome anything if you try hard. For me English is just not a language its a new opportunity. Therefore, After college I want to improve the lives of others and work in public service. I have most interest in becoming a police officer. To become a police officer it’s my passion because I want to help other people and also I want to be a part of my community. While I know over time this may change, education will continue to help me learn more about myself and new ways I can give back to the community. one thing will never change that is I want to be someone who will provide opportunities to others as opportunities were given to me
