GUIDELINES TERM PAPER – POL2101A – 2020
The goal of the essay is to provide a clear, concise response (argument) to the research question that is backed by rational consideration of the evidence.
Your response (argument) should be summarized in a sentence or two – the thesis statement. The thesis statement should appear in the first paragraph of your essay.
You can assume an educated reader. Do not spend more than a few paragraphs providing background information. Focus on providing information that advances your argument.
While the balance of the paper will defend your argument, you should also acknowledge counter-arguments and seek to demonstrate that your argument is superior.
The essay should be 8 to 10 pages (plus bibliography and title page), double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font with standard margins. Remember to include a title page with your name, your student number, the date, the course number, my name and your TAs name.

1.Some political commentators have argued that social conservatism is a less powerful political force in Canada than in the United States. Do you agree? Make sure to explain why the strength of social conservatism in both countries is similar or different.
2.Since the early 20th century, the Conservative Party (or its predecessor the Progressive Conservative Party) has governed for approximately 40 years (out of 120 years). This is significantly less than Conservative parties in most Anglo-Saxon democracies. What explains this relative lack of success of the Conservative Party in Canada from a comparative perspective?
3.According to some scholars, party discipline in Canada is stricter than in countries such as Australia or the United Kingdom. Do you agree? 4.Some have argued that Canadian women do not fare as well as Scandinavian women when it comes to gender equality. Is this an accurate portrait of the socio-economic situation of women in both countries? Make sure to explain why the situation of women is better or is similar.
