There’s an apocryphal (it’s a good word – look it up if you don’t know it) saying that goes something like “There were no atheists in the ancient world.”  Leaving aside whether that is literally true or not (and we should be careful about making absolute statements), religion played a number of important roles in virtually every ancient civilization.  For this assignment, I’d like you to each list and discuss three roles that religion played for people in the distant past (say, before 1000 CE/AD) that they don’t necessarily play today. If you really want to impress, give specific examples from the videos below.
