For Part I, the best advice I can give is to be as comprehensive and specific as you can. There’s no length requirement, though if it’s brief and vague it can’t really be comprehensive and specific. These are not short answer questions, rather you should be writing in multiple paragraphs. You are NOT expected to use citations.
For Part II, in a paragraph date and identify each term AND include a single historical significance at the end that all the terms have in common. You do not need to provide a separate example of historical significance for each term here. Rather you need to find a single significance that all the terms have in common. The significance need not be more than a sentence. Do make sure, though, that the significance goes beyond the obvious like “these are important terms about California history.” Be sure to address all the terms in each cluster.
Part I. Please answer the essay questions below.
1. Explain how the lives of Native Americans in California changed from the arrival of the Spanish into the 1850s. What impacts did arriving Europeans have on native cultural, economic, and political practices? How did Native Californians respond to the presence of various Europeans and the new societies they sought to create in California?
2. Describe how the arrival of growing numbers of Anglo-Americans affected California society in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. You may consider how growing Anglo-American dominance changed society, the environment, the economy, and the lives of various racial/ethnic groups, among other possible changes.
Part II. Please answer the two clusters of terms as directed above. Be sure to include all the terms in each cluster.(20 percent each)
