The following instructions provide you with the information necessary to write a review on a live dance performance. When viewing a dance concert, keep in mind that individual interpretation is the beauty of the art form. Views are never right or wrong, but simply opinions. The main goal in constructing your review is to “make a case” for your opinion(s). Writing about your personal reactions is a must to successfully critiquing the performance. This is not a research paper, but a response to a performance that includes your views, ideas, and feelings. With that said, it’s always a good idea to do a little research on the performance before you watch to inform your viewing experience. Have fun and enjoy the show!
ONE of the following dance performances to review:
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre – Revelations – 2015 (Modern / Jazz / African, 34 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCsv5QlFo2Q (from time 1:17 – 1:51)
Review must be no less than two full pages and no longer than three (2-3pages) .
Typed, double spaced, 12 point font, name at the top of the first page.
Most performance/dance concerts include multiple dance works. Do not review the entire concert but rather state your overall impression and discuss 1-2 pieces. Limit your statements to those aspects you feel most strongly about.
Review should be structured like any other paper: introduction, summary/review, conclusions
All titles of dance pieces should be underlined.
Include ideas about the choreography, genre of dance, use of space, use of dynamics and rhythm, use of movement vocabulary, and your overall impressions (see below for further details and suggestions).
