Week2 Discussion Board

In Jeff Chang’s Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, the author emphasizes the importance of the peace treaty between Bronx gangs spearheaded by the Ghetto Brothers. Chang writes, “The peace treaty had been momentous. Change was sweeping through the Bronx. Youthful energies turned from nihilistic implosion to creative explosion” (Chang 64). The positive sense of community building that resulted from the peace treaty allowed for the neglected spaces of the South Bronx to become transformative spaces of renewal, collaboration, and creativity. After watching Charlie Aherns film Wild Style (1982) (Links to an external site.), answer the following two questions:

1. How did physical spaces influence/allow the creative practices of early hip hop culture?

2. How were those physical spaces the result of socio-economic practices?

Cite two examples, one from this week’s readings and one from the film, to support your answers. For the film, you may use time points to address specific scenes (i.e. At (1:02:00), Ray travels to an abandoned amphitheatre). For the text, just include an in-text citation, such as (Chang 65). You don’t need to include a bibliography/works cited for this assignment.
