Identify, describe and discuss areas of potential liability for the nurse when improper delegation takes place
Describe and discuss ways to reduce patient risk such as a Fishbone Diagram
Assignment Overview
In this writing assignment, students’ will examine how their state’s Nurse Practice Act addresses delegation. In addition, students will explore and compare proper and improper delegation and how proper delegation reduces risk for the patient and liability for the nurse.
Utilizing 3 peer reviewed non foreign journal articles published within the last 5 years at a minimum, the textbook readings,presentations, the students’ state Nurse Practice Act and a self identified delegation scenario, students will write a 2 page (500-600 word) written assignment. At the completion of the written assignment, students should be able to put into practice and have an understanding of their states’ Nurse Practice Act, the Laws and Rules and steps associated with the proper delegation of nursing tasks as well as the liability and ways to reduce patient risk when improper delegation has taken place.
Deliverables
A 2 page (500-600 word) written assignment. Note, number of pages does not include the Title page or Reference page or Appendix and an Abstract is not required.
Step 1.
Use the Internet to, locate your states’ Nurse Practice Act to read how delegation of nursing tasks are addressed
Read the steps associated with proper delegation
Use the Internet to locate the Joint ANA and National Council of State Boards of Nursing Position Statement, 2005
Read the Joint Statement on Delegation
Locate and integrate information read and attained within 3 peer reviewed non foreign journal articles published within the last 5 years which address delegation, the delegation of nursing tasks, liability and patient risk. Note, foreign peer reviewed journal articles are not appropriate for this written assignment
Note, should a student experience their state Nurse Practice Act does not address delegation, the student may use another state’s information to complete this part of the written assignment, be sure to address within the written assignment and provide appropriate citation and reference.
For the State of Texas, the Nurse Practice Act and information on delegation are both located within the Texas Board of Nursing Website. The Nurse Practice is located under the title Laws and Rules and Delegation information is located under the title Practice.

Write a 2 page (500-600 word) written assignment, address and answer the questions for a self-identified Delegation Scenario in which you delegate one self-identified nursing task, however, the nursing task must not address routine nursing tasks such as vital signs, walking patients, getting patients up, turning the patient every 15 minutes, every 1 hour, etc or bathing a patient, etc
