Essay 2: Poetry

Word Count:
Essay: 600-700 words 

Explanation: 100 words 

Word Count Total: 700-800 words

Mandatory Sources: 
1 poem that has, or will be discussed, this semester

1 poem by the same author which is not a part of any classwork 

Outside Research: 
You may not use any outside research for this assignment. 

Prompt: 
Background Info: 
We have begun reading and thinking about poetry. While poetry can seem scary at first, it is not that scary once you realize that poetry argues something about the human condition. If it does its job, it shows us the ways in which we all are, at the same time, different and the same. 

What You Need to Do For This Essay: 
Reread the poetry we have already discussed and preview the poetry we have left for the semester (The full list is at the end of these instructions). Choose poetry you feel a connection to.
Once you have identified a poem that you connect with, go online and find one other poem by the same author. 
Compare and contrast the two poems using the following questions as a guide: 
In what ways do you connect with each poem and why?
How does the poetry reflect and/or respond to its cultural or historical surroundings? Does the poetry celebrate a culture, challenge a history, make us reimagine a cultural understanding, or simply reflect the cultural norms of its time period?
Note: You must use the names of the poetic devices appropriate for your discussion. These terms are the following: 

Simile-comparing two unlike things using the word like or as. 
Metaphor -comparing two unlike things without using the words like or as. 
Personification-giving inanimate (lifeless) objects human characteristics.
You do not need to use all three; only the ones which pertain to the poems you are discussing.

Citation Instructions: 
You need to have both in text citations and a Works Cited page.

Explanation Portion: 
DO NOT COMPLETE THIS UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE ROUGH DRAFT. 

For the explanation portion of the essay, you need to explain to me why you made the rhetorical (a big word for argument) choices you made as well as reflect on your process (a big word for how you felt while you were writing and revising). For the explanation you want to answer the following questions in the form of a paragraph (or paragraphs): 

Which aspects of writing this essay came easiest to you? Why do you think that might be? 
Which aspects of writing this essay were the most difficult for you? Why do you think that might be?

MLA Format should be :
12 point font
Times New Roman
Double spaced
