STEP 1: What about the film intrigues you most? That is, what images, ideas, or questions remain on your mind after you have watched it?

STEP 2:

Identify and describe a few scenes that illustrate your interest. Briefly explain why.
Which of these scenes deploy any of the narrative or stylistic conventions of Classical Hollywood filmmaking?
Which of these scenes could be described as relying on the alternative plot strategies and styles.
STEP 3: Analyze these scenes and interpret them in a way that both highlights your interests and specifies how their narrative or stylistic strategies replicate Classical Hollywood style and/or subvert it by deploying alternative film narratives and styles. This is how you can begin to establish the focus of your critical analysis and therefore the focus of your essay.

STEP 4: Once youve established the focus of your analysis (themes or concepts), you may want to set up a tentative thesis the main point youd like to bring across in your essay.
