Video: Episode 6: The City of Tomorrow (1931-1940) During the sixth episode of NEW YORK: A DOCUMENTARY FILM, the dramatic events that followed the Crash of ’29 fuel the greatest economic depression in American history and plunge the city and the nation into economic gloom.

1) How was New York City impacted by the Depression? What was the difference in political leadership during the crash and beginning of the Depression than what would later come with social democratic leaders?

2) A. What was the New Deal? B. How did the new deal change the way people view government and the role it plays in our lives? C. Explain at least five examples of New Deal programs and their lasting impact on the city/country.

3. How did La Guardia and Moses benefit from the New Deal? How did Robert Moses reshape New York City? (Note we are only looking at the 1930s-1945 so do not reference projects not in this weeks material)

Extra credit: What connections do you see with today’s economic crisis in NYC caused by the pandemic? How can we learn from the response during the 1930s to help the city’s recovery in 2020? (you must answer both parts of this question as the second part is most important)
