Divided Attention

Paragraph One  – Summary: Should Include:
Name of Book
Name of Author
Copyright Date
3-5 sentences of what the chapter is about.

A summary should answer basic questions about the original text such as “Who did what, where, and when?”, or “What is the main idea of the text?”, “What are the main supporting points?”, “What are the major pieces of evidence?”

Should not include
Your opinions
It should not be written in the first person. Do not use You or I.
Do not include many details
Should not have quotes

Paragraph 2  –  never use the pronoun You
Find something/idea/concept/method/quote in the reading that really interests you.

State what it is by paraphrasing it while still giving acknowledgment to the author.
Now explain why you picked this idea.
What does it mean to you?
Do you or know of someone who has experience with this idea?  If so, explain
With the information you learned, does this change your view?
Paragraph 3  – never use the pronoun You
Find a different idea/concept/method/quote that is different from paragraph 2 in the reading that really interest you.

State what it is by paraphrasing it while still giving acknowledgment to the author.
Now explain why you picked this idea.
