You will trace a theme through sources encountered in the course. You will choose a theme (such as politics, society, the economy, or culture) and it is strongly recommended that you narrow that to a subtheme (such as the role of religion in politics or the roles of women). Choose primary sources from different cultures and time periods and, using what you know about each sources context (from the lecture videos), write an essay comparing and contrasting the three passages with respect to your chosen theme and considering change and continuity over time. The strongest essays will consider the passages source and author and use each passages historical context (giving at least approximate dates) to explain the reasons for the similarities and differences between the passages with respect to the chosen theme. References are not needed for this paper, which functions as a take-home midterm.
