English Literature A: Explanatory Directions (Notice! It doesn’t say “essay!”)
Once we get used to doing something.– tying a shoe lace, brushing our teeth, making a sandwich-it becomes so easy that we no longer think about the steps. Doing these tasks becomes automatic. To explain an easy task, however, to someone who has never done it can make the task seem very complicated.
For this assignment, you will create a functional document in which you teach someone how to get to school, starting at the front door of your house and ending at the door of your classroom.
As you prepare, think about the following:
How can i use imagery (language that appeals to the five senses) to make my explanation clearer?
What landmarks can i use?
Is time relevant to my explanation?
How can i organize my information? For example, should one section be getting out of my neighborhood, another be getting to the school site, and the last be about getting to the room?
How will my introduction, thesis, and conclusion be similar and different from those found in a regular essay.
You will not be writing a traditional essay for this assignment. You will not be using MLA format. Do not take that to mean, however, that you need to put less effort into it
. In addition to writing clear instructions, you must also include at least the following text features:
One headline, boldfaced at 20-pt. font, centered
Three sub-headings, boldfaced at 16-pt. font
One bulleted list of at least three items
One illustration (picture or map) with caption (10-point font, italicized)
